Get to Know the Avalon Team: Stu Baker

In our series Get to Know the Avalon Team, we're providing a closer look at the individuals who are working each day to develop the Avalon Media System.

Stu Baker

Stu Baker is the Associate University Librarian for Library Technologies at Northwestern University and the co-Project Director on the project.

Can you talk a bit about your role in the project?

I’m one of the project directors along with Jon Dunn and Claire Stewart.  We are responsible for overall project direction and priority setting and direction of the product. Right now we are beginning to focus our efforts on how to sustain Avalon once the grant is over.

What is a typical work week like for you?

As the Associate University Librarian of Library Technologies at Northwestern University, I have broad responsibility for development and implementation of technology services at the libraries, including the library management system, discovery and resource sharing systems, all web publishing services, staff and public computing, and digital repository implementation. The library has one of the largest technology footprints on campus and we are actively engaged in technological and scholarly activities across campus with many of the schools and Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT). Really what that means is that I attend lots of meetings and take people out to lunch!

What apps/software/gadgets can't you live without?

Hmmm need to think about that one. Vitamix, Ken Onion-Shun 8” Chef’s Knife, iPhone, Bluetooth headsets, parchment paper. Safari, All-Clad 12” fry pan. Can’t live without software: OSX, IOS, MacGourmet Deluxe and of course, Avalon Media System.

When you’re not working, what can you be found doing?

Fermenting things. Cooking things. Looking for cooking and other geek gadgets.  Volunteering at Green City Market.  Watching da Bears, Bulls, Hawks and Sox! Playing and watching tennis. Hanging out with my buddies in Garbage and listening to music. Spoiling my creatures (cats, fish, newt) and my wife!
